INFORM: ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER
Job Description

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DATE FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS IS NOW PAST. THIS PAGE REMAINS HERE FOR THE INFORMATION OF REFEREES.

Inform (www.inform.ac and on the LSE Collections Website) is seeking to appoint an Administration Officer, whose job is primarily to run a small office in central London. This includes responsibility for looking after financial matters and office equipment, servicing Inform’s Board of Governors, ensuring that office files are kept accurate and up-to-date, organising one-day conferences and other events, overseeing mailings, and supervising the work of interns and volunteers. The position requires someone with extensive IT, communication and organisational skills. The applicant must have the ability to work well with a dynamic team of four other salaried staff, often under pressure, and to show discretion and flexibility, responding as necessary to enquiries from the public.

A precise description of the work is virtually impossible, given the ever-evolving nature of the organization, and the small size of the office. All members of Inform’s staff are expected to work as a team, answering emails, letters and telephone enquiries, obtaining and checking data, and ensuring that all information obtained while working for Inform is easily accessible not only to the staff but also to others who wish to make use of Inform’s non-confidential resources. Day-to-day arrangements about who will be responsible for particular duties will be decided by the team, in collaboration with the Management Committee.

Applicants who wish to work part-time (3 days per week minimum) will be considered.

Good computer skills in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Outlook and Word, are essential. Experience of working with a database and managing a website would also be an advantage. In addition, applicants should have some experience of:
                (a) administering a small office,
                (b) bookkeeping,
                (c) organising conferences.

Applicants with training in the quantitative and qualitative methods of the social sciences and the study of religion from a social science perspective would be particularly welcome.

Inform is a non-profit charity that collects, assesses and disseminates information on minority religious movements and alternative spiritualities. Using social science methodologies it conducts research to provide information that is as accurate, balanced and up-to-date as possible. As part of its aims and objectives, Inform maintains a vast database as well as an information line for enquirers. Inform also organizes two day-long conferences each year.

Salary depends on qualification and experience, but will be within the range £18,000-£23,500 p.a. full-time, inclusive of London Allowance. Part-time work will be paid pro rata to the full-time rate.

Applicants should send the completed application form (which can be down-loaded from Inform Admin Application) by email only to Professor Eileen Barker at Infjob@live.com as soon as possible, but no later than 1st July 2008. Interviews are arranged for 16th July.
